Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis
The information here is given as a guide only and patients are advised to seek further information from their own doctor.

Infection is a BIG risk

Reduce the risk of infection by using clean procedures
Wash Hands Wash hands fastidiously for two minutes and dry with clean paper towel.
Carefully wipe clean the surface you use to do your CAPD. If the first wipe is slightly dry use two.
Exchange Carefully follow the instructions for your exchange procedure

You will become ill if infection occurs in the Peritoneum. The infection is called Peritonitis.

When you drain out the waste fluid it should be clear.

Signs of infection are :-

Hazy or cloudy fluid

You may feel sick or vomit

You may have severe stomach pains

If you have an infection you must

Telephone Hospital

Phone the Hospital straight away,
Day or Night

You must come to the Renal Unit even if you feel well!
The infection WILL NOT GO AWAY without treatment.

Early Treatment will :-

Lessen the damage to the Peritoneum

Lessen the risk of having to stay in hospital

Will make you feel better more quickly

You will be given a course of treatment with antibiotics and advice on how to proceed.

Be aware of possible problems causing infection
Leak Fluid will leak out if your line is split. This is caused by wear and tear and may not be visable. You may see 'beads' of fluid and the line may feel damp.
Line Contamination Line contamination can be caused by touching or dropping the end of the line.
Take extra care during your exchange.

What to do if the above happens.
Clamp Do not continue to use. Tighten twist-clamp and use a new Minicap.
Telephone Telephone the Renal Unit. If it happens during the night wait until morning
Renal Unit You will need to visit the Renal Unit in order to change the line and to be given antibiotics.
